A note from Jiban
I run NE Fleet out of Guwahati. We do this route — Guwahati to Shillong — almost every single day. Sedans for couples, Innovas for families, Urbanias for corporate groups. I've seen people overpay because they didn't know what questions to ask, and I've seen people get scammed by quotes that looked cheap but had hidden extras. This guide is the honest version I'd give a friend.
What Actually Affects the Price
Everyone asks "how much for Guwahati to Shillong?" like it's a fixed answer. It's not. Here's what actually moves the number:
- Vehicle type — A Dzire is cheaper than an Innova, obviously. But the gap isn't as big as people assume for a short 100 km trip.
- One-way vs round trip — One-way costs less upfront but the vehicle has to come back empty. Round trip bundles that return cost in.
- Multi-day bookings — If you're staying overnight in Shillong or heading to Cherrapunji the next day, a 2-day package beats booking two separate trips.
- Season — October to December is peak. March to May is holiday rush. Book early or pay more.
- Route extras — Want to stop at Umiam Lake? Side trip to Cherrapunji or Dawki? That changes the math.
- Pickup location — Airport pickups sometimes have a small surcharge. City pickup is standard.
The drive itself is about 100 km and takes 3–4 hours depending on traffic. Nongpoh is the halfway point — decent spot for a chai break or a quick meal. Umiam Lake is worth a 10-minute stop if you've got time. Your driver will know the route.
What Catches People Off Guard
I'm going to be blunt because I'd rather you hear it from me than get surprised on travel day:
The quote you get over WhatsApp is usually the vehicle + driver + fuel. The extras pile up later if you don't ask upfront.
- Night charges — Some operators charge extra after 8 PM. We don't, but many do. Ask.
- Driver accommodation on multi-day trips — Driver needs a place to sleep. That cost is usually separate.
- Side trips not in the original booking — You say "oh let's also go to Dawki" on the day. That's extra distance, extra hours, extra money.
- Meal allowance for the driver — On multi-day trips, this is standard. Budget ₹200–300/day for it.
- Tolls and parking — Usually included, but confirm. It's not much on this route, but it adds up.

Honest Comparison: One-Way vs Round Trip vs Multi-Day
One-Way (Guwahati → Shillong)
Cheapest upfront. You get dropped off, vehicle returns empty. Good if you're flying out of Shillong or taking a bus back. But if you need to come back, you'll pay again separately — and two one-ways often cost more than a round trip.
Same-Day Round Trip
Vehicle waits in Shillong while you do your thing, then drives back the same evening. Almost always cheaper than two one-ways. Good for day trips — you get 4–6 hours in Shillong.
Multi-Day (2–3 Days)
Best value if you're exploring Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Dawki. You keep the vehicle the whole time. More expensive daily, but way cheaper than booking separate trips. For most tourists, a 2-day package is the sweet spot.
How to Actually Get the Best Price
I'm giving you this advice even though it means you might not book with us. A good deal matters more than a specific vendor.
- Always ask for an itemized quote. Not just "₹5,000 for sedan." Break it down: vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls. If they won't break it down, that's a red flag.
- Always confirm if fuel is included. Some operators quote vehicle + driver only. You end up paying for fuel separately, and that's ₹800–1,000 extra on this route.
- Always ask about night charges. If your flight lands at 9 PM, you need to know if there's a surcharge. Some charge ₹500 extra for night pickups.
- Book at least a week ahead during peak season (October–December, March–May). Last-minute bookings cost more and you might not get the vehicle you want.
- Book through a local service. We know these roads. We know which routes are faster during traffic. We know where to stop. That local knowledge saves you time and money.
